UX Audit for an Educational Mobile Platform

Improving usability, accessibility, and brand consistency in a mobile learning app

Project Overview

Colgate StuDENT is a mobile-first learning platform designed to offer educational content for dental professionals. The project focused on evaluating the usability and accessibility of the app using Nielsen’s Heuristics and WCAG guidelines, with the goal of identifying design gaps and proposing improvements that enhance both the experience and inclusivity for all users.

My Role

As Senior Product Designer, I conducted a full UX audit, including:

  • Evaluation of visual and interactive patterns across devices

  • Accessibility assessment (contrast, navigation, multimedia)

  • Brand consistency review across Colgate, Meridol, and Elmex

  • Heuristic analysis with detailed documentation and design recommendations

Accessibility tests with the brand colors

The plug in stark was used as a contrast testing tool.

Heuristic evaluation

At this stage, I mapped user flows for both anonymous and authenticated users and conducted a heuristic evaluation of each screen to identify violations of Nielsen’s usability principles.

Key Findings

  • 25+ violations of the Consistency & Standards heuristic

  • Low contrast ratios in various screens and elements

  • Confusion caused by overlapping brand identities

  • Content not adapted for assistive technologies (e.g., videos without captions)

  • Overwhelming UI in small-screen devices due to layout choices and excessive scrolling

Recommendations

  • Create a unified brand system that integrates all product lines under one cohesive identity

  • Improve typography, spacing, and color contrast for accessibility

  • Redesign flows like registration, filters, and learning modules to reduce friction

  • Introduce a responsive feedback system for loading states

  • Differentiate the guest vs. logged-in experience with tailored menus

  • Implement inclusive video content with subtitles and better player contrast

Outcome

The audit delivered a clear and strategic roadmap to enhance the StuDENT app in terms of usability, accessibility, and brand consistency. It was a successful initiative that not only equipped the design and product teams with actionable insights, but also prompted the brand to rethink its long-term digital strategy. The findings sparked internal discussions about inclusive design, mobile-first optimization, and the future evolution of the platform — ensuring that user needs will continue to guide product decisions moving forward.
